THREE
AND OUT
The
top three storylines, news, notes and milestones from the week that was in high
school football.
Mater
Dei moves up
One
of the minor changes to this week’s Top 25 was Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.)
moving up one spot from No. 4 to No. 3. The Monarchs opened Trinity League
competition with a jaw-dropping 62-14 rout of state-ranked Santa Margarita
(Rancho Santa Margarita). By halftime, Mater Dei was already leading 56-0 and
super sophomore quarterback J.T Daniels had seven touchdowns.
Matthew
takes a toll
Hurricane
Matthew’s weekend assault on the Southeastern coast resulted in 10 games
involving ranked teams being postponed or outright cancelled. Most notably was
No. 2 IMG Academy nixing a scheduled home game against Southern Lab (Baton Rouge,
La.). The Ascenders haven’t seen action since Sept. 23, and with no state
playoffs on the horizon, are scheduled for a maximum of only 11 games this season.
For
the record
For
the second time in three weeks, Conley (Greenville) was a participant in the
highest-scoring game in North Carolina history. The Vikings lost to crosstown
rival Rose, 77-67, on Sept. 23 to set the old record. It was broken Thursday
night – which was Conley’s next game following a bye -- when they blistered Aycock (Pikeville), 83-68. … Joe Benedict of Sandy Creek set the New York
single-game rushing record, totaling 584 yards in a 53-34 win against Immaculate Heart Central (Watertown).

About
the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The
PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s
National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press
and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.
The
National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest
continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World
Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school
poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the
Associated Press.
Before
authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports
Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from
1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the
start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among
the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings
are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a
team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a
team's coaching and recent tradition.
