top three storylines, news, notes and milestones from the week that was in high
school football.
Stability
reigns in Top 25
For
the second consecutive week, the teams comprising the national Top 25 were
unchanged. There were only a few minor movements up and down in the poll. The
most notable development was Allen (Texas) moving up on spot to No. 4 after the
Eagles extended their regular-season winning streak to 43 games with a 42-7 rout of Guyer (Denton).
Hail
Mary saves Warren Central
No.
23 Warren Central (Indianapolis) survived to see another week in the national
rankings thanks to a 42-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass against St. Xavier
(Cincinnati). The score came on the final play of the game and gave the
Warriors a 19-18 road victory in their regular-season finale.
For
the record
Christian
Academy of Knoxville senior Cole Smith broke Tennessee’s career record for
passing yardage during a 42-27 win against McMinn Central (Englewood). Smith
had 174 yards in the game to push his career total to 11,032. The old record
was set in 2012 by Charlie High, who also played at CAK. … Paul Moro of Marcos
de Niza (Phoenix) became the winningest coach in Arizona history. Moro earned
win No. 332 when his team thumped Seton Catholic (Chandler), 48-21. … Eight-man
power Pahranagat Valley (Alamo, Nev.) earned its 100th consecutive
victory in the least dramatic fashion possible. The Panthers set the milestone
with a forfeit over winless Indian Springs. Pahranagat Valley joins De La Salle
(Concord, Calif.) and Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) as the only teams in high
school football history to win hit 100 consecutive wins.

PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s
National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press
and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.
The
National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest
continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World
Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school
poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the
Associated Press.
Before
authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports
Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from
1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the
start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among
the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings
are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's
schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's
coaching and recent tradition.
