THREE AND
OUT
The top
three storylines, news, notes and milestones from the week that was in high
school football.
More greatness
for the Gaels
Top-ranked
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) extended the nation’s fourth-longest streak – among
11-man teams – to 44 games with a 42-0 shutout of Bonanza. It’s also the Gaels’
78th consecutive win against Nevada opponents. Next up for Bishop
Gorman is next week’s home showdown versus preseason No. 1 and now 14th-ranked
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
Pair of
unbeaten squads enter Top 25
The
Woodlands (Texas) and former Prep Poll champion John Curtis Christian (River
Ridge, La.) joined the Top 25 for the first time this season.
Despite
having last week off, The Woodlands moved into the national rankings at No. 22.
Earlier this month, the Highlanders (4-0) knocked off defending Prep Poll
champion Katy and last year’s Texas 5A/I titlist George Ranch (Richmond) by a
combined margin of 51 points.
John Curtis
Christian – which finished No. 1 in the 2012 Prep Poll – is back in the
national rankings after a 4-0 start. The Patriots handled state-ranked Brother Martin (New Orleans), 26-9, in front of 10,000 fans and a national television
audience.
For the
record
Senior Tim
Tawa of regionally ranked West Linn (Ore.) broke his state’s all-time record
for touchdown passes. Tawa threw for six touchdowns in a 50-7 rout of Tualatin,
pushing his career total to 107. … Rose (Greenville, N.C.) topped city rival Conley, 77-67, in a game that set a new state record for total points scored.
Despite his team being on the losing side, Conley junior quarterback Holton
Ahlers accounted for another state record with nine total touchdowns. … Senior
Nathaniel Holcomb of Puyallup (Wash.) set a new Washington 11-man record when
he threw 10 touchdowns passes in a 77-60 win against South Kitsap (Port
Orchard). …Tyler Nichelson of Ashland-Greenwood HS (Ashland, Neb.) established
a new Nebraska 11-man record by rushing for 474 yards in a 41-27 victory over
Milford-Dorchester (Milford).

About the
PrepNation National Prep Poll
The
PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s
National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press
and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.
The National
Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually
published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features
Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll
distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the
Associated Press.
Before
authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports
Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from
1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the
start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among the
criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are
strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's
schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's
coaching and recent tradition.
