RECAPPING THE RANKINGS
Top Five Storylines
1. DeMatha tops another Fla. power: D.C. Catholic powerhouse
DeMatha moved up to No. 6 after its second win over a nationally ranked South
Florida team in as many weeks. The Stags followed up their 38-14 win against
then-No. 6 Miami Central in Maryland with a 23-22 road win against No. 13 American Heritage (Plantation).
2. Bingham no match for No. 2 Bishop Gorman this time: Last year Bingham took
eventual Prep Poll champion Bishop Gorman to overtime in Las Vegas. The result
wasn’t nearly as a close last Friday when the Gaels came away with a 38-20 win
in Utah that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.
3. Colerain wins Cincinnati collision: Hard-nosed defense was
the star of the day as No. 17 Colerain emerged with a 13-10 overtime win over
No. 19 St. Xavier. The teams have now split their past eight meetings, dating
back to 2011.
4. Centennial rolls in rematch of epic playoff game: Centennial (Corona)
has climbed 11 spots in the Top 25 since the preseason. Its 52-13 rout of Serra (Gardena) last Saturday is a big reason why. The Huskies completely dominated this much-anticipated
rematch of their 68-64 Pac-5 playoff win from last season.
5. Byrnes upsets
Mallard Creek in Carolina showdown: Then-No. 10 Mallard Creek (N.C.)
plummeted out of the Top 25 after losing 31-29 at South Carolina power Byrnes.
The Mavericks had erased a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter before Byrnes
pulled out the win with a 19-yard field goal in the closing seconds.
Top Five Risers
1. McEachern (Ga.)
2. Colerain (Ohio)
3. Mater Dei (Calif.)
4. Westfield (Texas)
5. Bergen Catholic
(N.J.)
Top Five Feats … plus one
1. Lufkin (Texas) was
certainly down – but definitely not out – when it fell behind, 42-10, at
halftime against rival Lee (Tyler). The Panthers responded to outscore Lee, 39-7, in the second half and ended up winning the game, 52-49, on a
game-winning field goal in overtime.
2. The biggest upset of
the weekend was Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) winning a 76-53 shootout over Mililani
that knocked Hawaii’s defending Division I state champion out of the regional
rankings. The Patriots – who rebounded in a big way from a 43-16 loss to St.
Louis (Honolulu) a week earlier – ran for over 500 yards and got 446
all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns from junior receiver-defensive back
Ethan Dedeaux.
3. Chris Helbig of Holy
Family (Broomfield) set Colorado’s single-game record for passing yards during a 49-43 win against Mountain View (Loveland). Helbig, a senior, threw for 607
yards and six touchdowns in the game.
4. Maine-Endwell set
the New York state record for consecutive wins. The Spartans rushed for over 500 yards en route to a 54-7 blowout of Corning that was their 52nd straight win
dating back to the 2011 season.
5. Georgia’s longest
active win streak was snapped when No. 10 McEachern (Powder Springs) pummeled Buford,37-14. The Wolves had won 42 in a row dating back to 2012. The win propelled
McEachern from just outside the Top 25 last week to No. 10 in the latest
national rankings.
Plus One. Eastern
Christian Academy (Elkton, Md.) earned its way into the regional rankings with
an impressive 42-20 win over then-No. 15 Paramus Catholic (N.J.). The Honey
Badgers had lost three previous games against New Jersey teams, including a
63-28 blowout against Paramus Catholic last season. Since its first season in
2012, Eastern Christian Academy has compiled a 16-13 overall record against teams from
11 different states plus D.C. and Canada.

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015. The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.
Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
