RECAPPING
THE RANKINGS
Top
Five Storylines
1.
Top-ranked St. John Bosco dominates in Oregon. What figured to be the No. 1 Braves’
first real test of the year wasn’t much of a challenge at all. After spotting
preseason-regionally ranked Portland Central Catholic an early 3-0 lead, SJB roared
back to win a 66-17 blowout that featured over 300 yards rushing as a team.
2.
Another state, another big win for Bishop Gorman. The second-ranked Gaels followed up victories
over defending state champs from Arizona and Utah with a dominant 35-7 win against Washington power Bellevue. Gorman’s tour of the West continues Friday when
it hosts regionally ranked Long Beach Poly (Calif.).
3.
A Top 25 shakeup for Georgia. Grayson
(Loganville) entered the national rankings at No. 19 after a 26-24 win against then-No. 22 Archer (Lawrenceville) that was decided on a late field goal.
Archer dropped out of the national poll, as did then-No. 10 McEachern (Powder
Springs) after it was stunned by winless Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee), 9-6.
4.
La Salle emerges in Cincy. No.
23 La Salle became the third different Ohio team – all from Cincinnati -- to
appear in the Top 25 already this season. The Lancers slipped past then-No. 21 Colerain, 39-36, on a 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds by Ohio State
commit Drue Chrisman.
5.
Cedar Hill rises above Skyline. The
Longhorns moved up three spots to No. 8 in the national rankings after a 20-10 win over regionally ranked Skyline (Dallas). It ended a 21-game winning streak
for Skyline in the regular season.

Five Feats … plus one
1. Pennsylvania
teams combine for 197 points. National and state records fell left and
right as Meadville defeated DuBois by the eye-popping score of 107-90.
According to MaxPreps.com, DuBois sophomore quarterback Matt Miller broke the
single-game national record for passing yardage when he threw for 787 yards and
10 touchdowns – in a losing effort … in his first varsity start. Not to be
outdone, Meadville junior running back Journey Brown ran for a near-national
record 722 yards and 10 touchdowns.
2. Meanwhile,
another Pennsylvania game ends with 133 points. Must have been something in
the air Friday in the Keystone State. Newport scored 11 times on 12 offensive
possessions in an 85-48 rout of conference rival Juniata (Mifflintown).
3. Green
grabs the reins for No. 7 Allen. The much-discussed backup role for
Oregon-bound quarterback Seth Green might now be history. Green, who has shared
snaps with junior Mitchell Jonke since transferring to Allen from Minnesota
last spring, started and played the majority of the Eagles’ 45-15 rout of
McKinney Boyd last week. The consensus four-star prospect totaled more than 300
combined passing and rushing yards and two touchdowns.
4. Backyard
Bowl goes to Jenks. The No. 25 Trojans upended their archrival Tulsa Union,
45-27 at the University of Tulsa’s Chapman Stadium. It was the 21st time the
teams have met since 2004, with Jenks now holding a slim 11-10 advantage. One
of the two teams has won the state title in Oklahoma’s largest classification
every season since 1996.
5. Male
dominates No. 1-versus-No. 2 clash in Kentucky. Regionally ranked
Louisville Trinity – which has dominated Kentucky prep football with 11 state
titles the last 14 years – got a taste of its own medicine when was ambushed by No. 2 Male, 42-13. Trinity was its own worst enemy, committing 11 penalties for
98 yards and two turnovers.
Plus One … Gender gap takes a hit on fake punt. Wilson (Portsmouth, Va.)
punter Cynthia Brown tossed a 10-yard pass that turned into a 52-yard touchdown reception by junior Kevin Whitfield in a 14-6 loss to Deep Creek (Chesapeake).
Unofficially, Brown is the first female to throw a touchdown pass in a varsity
game since 2012.

About the PrepNation National
Prep Poll
The
PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s
National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press
and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.
Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
