RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

1. Six-time Prep Poll champion De La Salle tumbled eight spots to No. 13 in the Top 25 after losing at Euless Trinity, 26-21. It was the Spartans’ first game against a Texas team. Led by first-year coach Chris Jensen, the Trojans catapulted to No. 9.

2. Arlington Martin is another Texas squad making a huge jump in this week’s rankings, also after defeating a Top-5 team. The No. 12 Mavericks thumped then-No. 4 DeSoto,39-19, holding an Eagles offense that returned Ohio State-bound quarterback Tristen Wallace nearly 30 points below their 2014 scoring average. 

3. In the first game of the Kenneth Sanchez coaching era, defending Prep Poll titlist Bishop Gorman opened against an Arizona opponent for the fourth time in five years. The Gaels ran past No. 23 Chandler, 35-14, for their fourth win against a Top 25 team in their last 14 games.

4. DeMatha jumped six spots to No. 8 after dominating then-No. 6 Miami Central. The only lowlight for the Stags in the 38-14 blowout win was a serious ankle injury to senior receiver Darryl Turner (Maryland).

5. While preseason Top 10 teams Miami Central and IMG Academy were stumbling out of the gate, third-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas cemented the top Florida ranking with its 35-3 rout of defending 4A state champ Booker T. Washington. The nationally televised loss ended the Tornado’s 41-game winning streak.

Top Five Feats … plus one

1. Senior Spencer Peterson of NorthPointe Christian (Grand Rapids) tied a Michigan record when he scored five touchdowns in the first quarter of a 55-20 rout of Hamtramck.

2. South Carolina’s record winning streak came to a crashing end when Abbeville clobbered Christ Church (Greenville), 55-14. Christ Church had won its previous 55 games, dating back to the second game of the 2011 season. Abbeville outscored the Cavaliers 34-0 in the second half.

3. No. 18 St. Xavier’s entry into the Top 25 was paved by a sparkling 57-7 season-opening rout of Covington Catholic (Ky.). The Bombers scored on their first nine possessions and took a 50-0 lead into the halftime break.

4. Lawrence County (Moulton) and East Lawrence (Trinity) tied a 36-year old Alabama record when they played a seven-overtime game, which finally ended in a 62-54 Lawrence County victory.

5. Will Harwood returned two punts (69 and 68 yards) for touchdowns and scored on a kickoff return from 87 yards out as Pine Lake Prep (Mooresville, N.C.) crushed South Davidson (Denton), 50-7. Harwood had an additional 68-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter that was negated by a penalty, otherwise he would have tied single-game state records for punt return touchdowns and total return touchdowns.

Plus one. Union (Grand Rapids, Mich.) didn’t just end the 25-game losing streak it took into this season, it buried all remnants of the two-and-half-season long run of defeats deep into the West Michigan soil. The Red Hawks steamrolled Lee (Wyoming), 60-0, for their first season-opening victory – and just fourth win overall -- since 2009.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present. 

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
