FEATS OF THE WEEK: Elwood, Ind., senior Sammy Mireles ran for 239 yards
and scored five touchdowns – including on a 36-yard return of an interception –
to lead his team to a 58-50 opening-round playoff win against Lapel, Ind. Last
week, Mireles became Indiana’s all-time rushing leader. He has 7,932 career
yards. ... Converse, Texas, Judson blasted San Marcos, Texas, 72-18. The win
clinched the Rockets’ 37th consecutive winning season, a new state
record. ... Senior Marcus Jester of Creve Coeur, Mo., De Smet tied a state
single-game record with eight rushing touchdowns – all in the first half of his
team’s 75-0 rout of St. Louis, Vashon. ... No. 14 Bradenton, Fla., Manatee
rallied from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit and defeated No. 20 Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., University, 28-24. It was the Suns’ first loss since the end of the 2011
season. ... Pittsburgh, Central Catholic slipped into the Top 25 after
completing an undefeated regular season with a 55-0 rout of Butler. It’s the
sixth shutout in nine games for the No. 25 Vikings this season. ... The curtain
dropped on the 2013 season in Alaska, the only state that is done with its
playoffs before the end of October. For the second year, the Medium School
division crown was won by Soldotna, Alaska, which beat Juneau, Alaska,
Juneau-Douglas, 56-49. It was the Stars’ 20th consecutive win and
sixth state title in eight years.
