FEATS OF THE WEEK: In a battle of schools that
won three of the last five National Prep Poll titles, No. 3 Fort Lauderdale,
Fla., St. Thomas Aquinas got a decisive 27-13 victory against River Ridge, La.,
John Curtis at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. John Curtis, last
season’s national champion, saw its 29-game winning streak come to an end. ... DeSoto,
Texas, entered the Top 25 after blowing out Euless, Texas, Trinity, 61-35.
Senior quarterback Desmon White led the No. 16 Eagles with six first-half
touchdowns and 561 combined passing and rushing yards. ... Senior running back
Arkeel Newsome of Ansonia, Conn., broke his state’s career record for scoring.
Newsome (committed to UConn) scored three touchdowns in a 52-7 rout of
Torrington, Conn., pushing his career points total to 758. ... Swartz Creek,
Mich., senior quarterback Brendon Fitch (uncommitted) threw for a state-record
603 yards with six touchdowns as his team outlasted Flint, Mich., Kearsley,
77-61. ... Senior running back Danikeei Hollowell (uncommitted) of Pensacola,
Fla., Escambia had a school-record 443 rushing yards with five touchdowns in a
70-54 win over Panama City, Fla., Rutherford. Escambia’s previous single-game record
(419 yards) belongs to current Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson.
