Jamie....simple question. St. X has played the toughest schedule in the country and remains undefeated. Among their opponents are 4 current or former top 25 teams, 4 reigning or recent state champions, and two then top 10 teams. None of their opponents all season had a losing record. Northwestern's credentials include an early season victory against then #1 SLC only, as the rest of their regular season schedule had a collective losing record and at least one squad was winless and hadn't scored in 22 quarters at the time they played. Since St. X won't be given the opportunity to play Northwestern, is there anything this team could do to earn a #1 ranking?

Highly doubtful seeing as X played the 2nd best team in the state and still didn't move up. The remaining teams aren't capable of being the one win that puts X over the top. From what I read to begin the season, Jamie stated that X deserved to be number one because if they ran the table with the brutal schedule they had they deserved to be number one. Well, push came to shove, X has ran the table thus far (and in many ohio fans opinion they will when out) and still they haven't returned to number one. Sure the second string QB is playing now, but he might as well have been the starter the whole year. Maybe I'm wrong and X will leapfrog next week or the week after, but my money is on Jamie not going through with his initial statement.

Northwestern is OBVIOUSLY the superior team due to the fact that they have so many players committed to the powerhouse program that is the University of Miami. Not only does Northwestern have a wealth of individual talent (after all, the Rivals rankings are flawless), but they also face one of the most brutal schedules in the country (Florida is high school football is simply a cut above the rest). It is ridiculous to even mention Northwestern and St. X in the same sentence. A well coached, disciplined, smart, and battle-tested Bomber TEAM could only hope to keep it close in a game against mighty Northwestern. The fact that St. X dominated both Colerain and DeMatha only proves that these two teams were very overrated this season.

hey 12:48 anon....
You have got to be kidding.....
Having seen NW twice (in person) and X 5 times (in person), X, as a team is as good if not better than NW. NW has individual talent, probably more than X. But individuals (by themselves) do not win games. TEAMS WIN GAMES. You discount DeMatha and Colerain, as being over-rated, why because X beat them. Well maybe Southlake Carroll was over-rated. What I know is NW schedule is a joke compared to the X schedule (look at all the power rankings). What I also know, while you want to discount DeMatha because it was their first game, I'll discount SLC because it was there 2nd. game.
So who has played a Top 10 team since then..... why it is St. X, wko beat a 12-0 team, and this week plays a 13-0 team, and probably next week will play a 14-0 team in Brunswick. Please dont't show your stupidity...You know nothing about HS football, if you say X cannot play with NW. I have seen them both (in person), X can play with anybody (and I am not from Ohio).

Hey Anon2:18...I think 12:48 was being sarcastic. Tough to tell on a blog but pretty sure he was being facetious.

St. Xavier is good. Watched them all year, am a Colerain fan, and was VERY impressed with them on Friday night. They are playing much better now than they did earlier in the year. The QB change has only IMPROVED this team.

A month into the season, I would not have picked St. X to beat Northwestern. Now, I'm not so sure. They are very, VERY good.

anon @ 12:48pm was definitely being sarcastic.

I think Jamie might be waiting to see if Northwestern loses in the playoffs before St. X's season is finished.

Check out the disparity between St. X's rating on maxpreps.com and calpreps.com with the #2 team's rating.

BYRNES REBELS FROM DUNCAN SC IS A NATIONAL POWERHOUSE! THEY ARE LEAD BY A SOPH. QB AND A SOPH RB. THEY BOTH HAVE SET SCHOOL RECORDS THIS YEAR. WE ARE 81-4 FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS, WINNING 4 OF THE PAST 5 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ON OUR WAY TO ANOTHER. 13-0 THIS YEAR WITH WINS OVER A OHIO AND FLA TEAMS. SCORING AVG AROUND 42/GAME. WE SHOULD BE TOP 5 NEXT YEAR PRESEASON. WHAT A GAME IT WOULD BE AGAINST XAVIER,LAKELAND,NORTHSIDE GA OR INDEPENDENCE IF THEY WILL FINALLY PLAY US.

No doubt Byrnes is a very good team. But let's get real. They aren't Top 5. "If they will finally play us"? I remember last year watching Byrnes play Cincinnati Moeller in the Herbstriet Challenge. The Byrnes fans around me were stunned at what a solid team Moeller was and said Moeller certainly should win the Ohio state championship. Well, Mo was a good team, but they were only ranked #7 in the city of Cincinnati at the time (and didn't come close to challenging for state). Byrnes beat them, to be sure, in overtime, I think, thanks to a missed Mo FG. But I respectfully submit that Byrnes fans' perspective is colored by the absence of real competition.

Come to think of it, that's the problem with MNW too. Who knows if they are as good as the hype? They haven't played anybody tough enough to find out.

Only one team has. X.

pretty sure Byrnes played a mediocre Ohio team, Centerville, and barely escaped....(the same team X scored 31 pts on in the first half then benched the starters for the rest of the game in typical X fashion, X never runs up the score like some "powerhouses")

Also, your shift key must be stuck, you might want to get that checked out.

Finally play you. Mr. 6.23 get your facts straight. Lakeland wanted to play both hoover and byrnes. But what do you do, you go out and get other florida teams to play you. Hoover got nease and byrnes got glades. Lakeland will play anyone anytime anywhere. with this bunch of very young players, they have beaten the #3 in 5a, #2 in 6a, then top ten in 4a winter haven, and top ten in 3a kathleen. Only loss coming to the #1 team in 5a by 4 points and lakeland gets another crack at them this week. So dont go around thinking lakeland is scared to play byrnes. I mean the naughts have experienced that probelm already with Duck n Dodge. And next year is just the start of at least two amazing years. Lakeland is a top 10 team next year. I mean the defense is composed of mostly 10th graders. This team will be almost unstoppable next year. And they should be looking for an out of state game.

Interesting question regarding who should be #1. Miami NW has arguably the most talented team around, but St. Xavier has played such a difficult schedule and has the best resume. I suspect if they played, NW would beat St. Xavier. For that reason, I would rank them #1.

As far as Byrnes, I'm from S.C. and from 2003-present, they have established themselves as the dominant program in the state. The fact that they have played and won games against teams outside of the state, means they deserve national recognition. However, the truth is what they are doing this year is a bit of a surprise because this is a very young team, comprised mostly of sophomores and juniors. You can't compare this year's Byrnes Rebels to the 03' and especially the 05' team which was the best team from S.C. in the last 15-20 years. Is this team top 5 nationally? No. I would put them in the top 25 and in the top 15 if they go ahead and win the state this year, which is not a guarantee because Northwestern (SC) is on a roll and if they play Summerville for the state championship in Columbia, that will be a test for them.

Finally let me say this. While Byrnes is not a top 5 or top 10 team this year, they will be loaded in 08' and 09'. If you are going to get Byrnes, this is the year to do it. They should be ranked preseason top 10 next year.

Good call up ole castle at lakeland and tell him you want to buck heads. This time you will get a good florida team. Not a team that had no chance to beat you before the game started. Becasue if you struggled with dr.P, Lakeland would destroy you in to small pieces.

But all things said. Byrnes is a good program with a lot of class players and a great coaching staff. I remember chating with some of the rebel fans at the herbie two years ago. They all love them some duncan byrnes football.

i have a question or concern what ever it is. but how come there are 5 teams on your ranking that have lost one game and are still pretty high up on the list and when LAKELAND lost ONE game right after they broke the state record of conceutive wins they get totally knocked out ogf the top? so whats up with that?
