#2 vs. #8 Should be a good game.

I'm saddened that Colerain lost their starting QB just before the playoffs started. This game could have been a GREAT one but as it stands now, it will probably be just a REALLY GOOD game with St. Xavier winning by 7-10 pts.

Jaime- are you the person who does the rankings for PrepNation? If so, you have ignored Chicago Mount Carmel for too long. They have been to the state championship in Illinois for 14 of the last 28 years; that means they reach the championship every other year- not too shabby.

This years Mount Carmel team is not their best of all time, but it may be their best team when it comes to winning (they have three 4th quarter wins against teams that were all ranked in state and still alive as of the state quarterfinals). Their opening season win was over 12 time state champ joliet catholic, aka Rudy's alma mater.

Chicago Mount Carmel is undefeated and 2 wins away from the state championship in the largest class in Illinois (8A). If you don't have them ranked by this weeks update, your poll is highly inaccurate (it is already very inaccurate to not include them at all). Check USA Today and MaxPreps to see a more accuate ranking of HS teams.

Is a win over Colerain a big enough win for St. Xavier to once again overtake the #1 spot in the polls?

Northwestern continues to win against nobodies, while St. X week in and out continue to beat the nations best.

Calpreps for St X...
(3) Top 100 wins (30-19 avg score)
(4) 101-200 wins
(4) 201-600 wins
(1) 1000-1200 win (35-7 score)
(0-0) 1200+

Calpreps for Northwestern...
(1) Top 100 win (29-21 score)
(0) 101-200 wins
(0) 201-600 wins
(1) 1000-1200 win (24-12 score)
(8) 2000+ wins, with several in the 9,000-10,000 rankings

Anonymous 6:14 makes a good point. St. X is 12-0 against the country's toughest schedule, but is dismissed as not being "athletic" enough. Yet week after week they defeat more "athletic" teams. Football is a team sport, and success is defined by discipline, teamwork, individual performance and smart coaching. "Athleticism" only wins when these factors are absent.

The prepnation poll blurb cites Nortwestern's 6 commitments to U Miami - but that program has been mediocre at best since they lost the championship in 02. It hardly qualifies as a top tier selective program these days, and isn't much of an endorsement. And aside from a win against the then #2 team (who also has played a weak schedule), Northwestern hasn't played anyone notable.

I say it's time to give credit where it's due, and reward St X for its success against the most brutal schedule in the country. (and no, I'm not a St X alum or student).

Colerain's "backup" QB is just as good if not better than Reynolds. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see The 'Train win this one.

What a joke. Calling USA Today and MaxPreps accurate polls. MaxPreps is the least respected of any poll with USA Today fighting them for top spot. Wake up.

St. X rolls over Colerain 29-14.

Score doesnt reflect how dominating X was, and the officiating was the WORST I have ever seen at a high school game.

X should be number one if they run the table and win state. their regular season schedule and playoff run is much tougher then miami northwesterns. If SLC doesn't win state in Texas MNW should def not be ranked over X (if X goes undefeated) and even if SLC does win state X deserves to be number 1.

At this point in the year, it's pretty obvious who is #1. Just look at who has played the toughest schedule. Who knows how good MNW or SLC are? They haven't been tested.

Nobody comes close to X.

Jamie,
I'd be interested in reading about your thought process (pros & cons, etc) regarding your football rankings. In your week 6 (Sept 17) poll you moved StX down to #2 and NW up to #1, with the caveat that should St.X run the table they'd likely regain #1 spot. How do you feel now, or are you still taking a wait 'n see approach?
