RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

Early playoff exits = Top 25 exits: The season ended sooner than expected for then-No. 11 Chandler (Ariz.) and then-No. 23 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.). Chandler was upset by regionally ranked Desert Ridge, 24-21, in the Division I state semifinals. American Heritage was stunned, 27-20, by regionally ranked Hallandale in round two of the Florida 5A playoffs. The Patriots beat Hallandale by 23 points in the regular-season finale.

Georgia, Hawaii teams make Top 25 debuts: Recently crowned Division I Hawaii champion Kahuku and Georgia 6A contender Roswell landed in the national poll for the first time this season. No. 24 Kahuku clobbered St. Louis, 39-14, for its fifth win over the Crusaders in six state championship game meetings. No. 25 Roswell nudged into the Top 25 after dominating Camden County, 34-15, in a second-round playoff game.

Cavaliers knocking on Top 10 door: The biggest jump among Top 25 teams of the week belonged to Lake Travis. The Cavaliers rocketed from No. 21 to No. 11 after a 28-21 win against former Top 25 squad Westfield (Houston) in round two of the 6A/Division II playoffs.

Eagles flirt with disaster: A PAT that caromed off the right upright helped No. 5 Allen survive the closest call of any Top 10 team last week. The Eagles let a 14-point fourth-quarter lead slip away, but still defeated former Top 25 team DeSoto, 41-40, in a 6A/Division I round-two game and extended their winning streak to 55 games.

Tumult in the regional Top 15s: Week 14 offered – by far – the highest number of shakeups across the seven polls. Every region has at least one new team this week -- the Northeast and Southwest each have four.

Top Five Risers

1. Kahuku (Hawaii)
2. Penn-Trafford (Pa.)
3. Herriman (Utah)
4. Denton Ryan (Texas)
5. Jenks (Okla.)

Top Five Feats … plus one

Baylor-committed senior Tren’Davian Dickson of Navasota became Texas’ all-time leader in touchdown receptions during a 35-21 4A/I playoff win over Jasper. Dickson has 74 in his career, one better than former University of Texas standout Jordan Shipley. Dickson set a single-season national record with 35 touchdown catches last season.

Regionally ranked New Palestine (Ind.) set a state record for total offense in a season during its 56-6 rout of Castle in the semi-state round of the 5A playoffs. The Dragons had 423 yards of total offense in the game, upping their season total to 6,935 yards.

Running back Jared Smith of Pewamo-Westphalia now holds Michigan’s single-season records for rushing yardage and touchdowns. The junior went for 193 yards and two scores in a 30-0 rout of Loyola (Detroit) in the Division 7 playoffs. He now has 3,094 yards and 52 touchdowns this season.

The longest winning streaks among 11-man and 6/8/9-man teams live on. Edgewood Academy (Elmoore, Ala.) topped Marengo Academy (Linden), 40-34, to win its 71st straight game and sixth consecutive state title in the Alabama Independent Schools Association Class AA final. Meanwhile, Pahranagat Valley (Alamo, Nev.) tied the national record for 8-man teams by defeating Whittell, 54-28, for its 93rd consecutive win and seventh straight Division IV state title.

Regionally ranked Kimberly (Wis.) captured its third consecutive state crown after beating Arrowhead, 49-42, for the Division 1 crown. On a snowy evening at Camp Randall Stadium, the Papermakers rallied for 21 points in the fourth quarter to secure their 42nd consecutive win.

Less than a month earlier, regionally ranked Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) dominated regionally ranked Herriman (West Herriman, Utah), 30-0, in the regular season finale. That humbling experience helped motivate the Mustangs to a gritty 17-14 win over Lone Peak last Friday for Utah’s 5A state championship. Lone Peak became the 58th team in Utah history to lose its only game of the season in the state championship.

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
