RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

1. Stunner in Minnesota: Eden Prairie’s quest for a fifth consecutive state title ended much sooner than expected with a 27-13 loss to Totino-Grace in the Class 6A state quarterfinals. Eden Prairie had won its last 40 games in a row, a streak that included three wins over Totino-Grace. Totino-Grace moved into the Midlands Top 15 as the de facto favorite for Minnesota’s 6A title while Eden Prairie dropped out.

2. Cedar Hill tumbles: Another huge upset occurred in Texas, where then-No. 6 Cedar Hill was shocked by two-loss Mansfield, 46-43. The loss dropped the Longhorns out of the national and regional rankings, at least for now.

3. Mater Dei also falls: Mater Dei dropped from No. 16 nationally to the bottom third of the West Coast regional rankings after losing to JSerra Catholic for only the second time in 10 meetings. JSerra Catholic had lost three games in a row before Friday’s 35-28 triumph.

4. Elder gets share of GCLS crown: Cincinnati Elder moved back into the Midwest Top 15 after beating regionally ranked La Salle, 21-7. The Panthers earned a share of the Greater Catholic League South title with St. Xavier. It’s their first since 2008.

5. Kahuku is King: Kahuku (Hawaii) debuted in the West Coast Top 15 after an impressive 20-7 win over then-regionally ranked Mililani for the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship.

Top Five Risers

1. Southlake Carroll (Texas)
2. Westlake (Austin, Texas)
3. Totino-Grace (Minn.)
4. Elder (Ohio)
5. Kahuku (Hawaii)

Top Five Feats … plus one

1. Grim does it again: For the second straight week, Derrion Grim of McNair (Stockton, Calif.) set a single-season state receiving record. The Nebraska recruit had 191 receiving yards in a 52-48 win against Chavez, pushing his season total to 1,767 yards. Grim also caught three touchdown passes – including the game-winner – to extend the state record he set last week to 31.

2. Pick six times four: Sedgwick set a Kansas record by returning four interceptions for touchdowns during a 44-7 rout of Moundridge. The Cardinals had eight interceptions in the game in total, tying a state record according to Kansas-sports.com.

3. Pick six times two: Nate Jones of Muskegon Central Catholic tied a Michigan record when he returned two interceptions for touchdowns in one quarter. Jones scored from 15 and 33 yards out to help spark a 49-7 rout of Sacred Heart (Mount Pleasant) in round one of the Division 8 state playoffs.

4. Like a Rolling Stone: Derius Stone from St. Mary (Rutherford, N.J.) dashed for 577 rushing yards and seven touchdowns only one 17 carries in a 62-20 rout of Emerson. That’s an average of nearly 34 yards per carry.

5. Connecticut field goal record set: Senior Peter Swindell of New Canaan became Connecticut’s all-time leader in field goals when he connected on the 19th of his career – a 29-yarder – during a 52-14 blowout of Norwalk.

Plus one … Champaign Central (Ill.) began its Class 5A playoff quest by doubling up on Jacksonville, 80-40. Those 80 points set a single-game playoff scoring record in Illinois. The Maroons steamrolled Jacksonville with 570 rushing yards.

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

I know I've beaten this horse before, but a team from WI definitely deserves to be in the top 15 in the Midwest.

Why isn`t Homewood-Flossmoor IL ranked in your top Midwest rankings??? They are better than the top teams from MI.
