RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

SJB, Centennial primed for Pac-5 playoffs: Anything other than a showdown between top-ranked St. John Bosco and No. 3 Corona Centennial in the Pac-5 Division championship next month will probably feel like a letdown – and a major surprise. St. John Bosco creamed Servite, 70-7, and Centennial thumped Norco, 67-20, as both teams finished the regular season 10-0 while averaging over 56 points per game.

Bishop Gorman rolls in postseason opener: No. 2 Bishop Gorman began the road to a likely seventh consecutive Nevada state crown with a 63-7 rout of Cimarron-Memorial. The Gaels haven’t lost to an in-state opponent since 2008.

Ohio playoffs begin: All five Ohio teams in last week’s national and regional rankings survived week one of the state playoffs. If brackets hold to form, No. 15 St. Edward and No. 16 Wayne might be headed for a rematch of last year’s Division I state final.

Gonzaga, Serra upset in regular season finales: Then-No. 12 Gonzaga (Washington) and then-No. 25 Serra (Gardena, Calif.) dropped out of the national Top 25 after suffering upset defeats against league rivals. Gonzaga’s bid for a 10-0 regular season ended with a 21-17 loss to St. John’s College. Serra fell short in its bid to win an outright Mission League when it lost at Chaminade, 38-21.

Loyola, Trinity Christian join Top 25: Loyola (Wilmette, Ill.) and Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.) are the new entries in this week’s national poll. No. 24 Loyola is fresh off a 49-0 shutout of defending state champion Stevenson in the Class 8A playoffs. No. 25 Trinity Christian Academy completed its first unbeaten regular season in seven years by defeating Pine Forest, 32-22.

Top Five Risers

1. Pearland (Texas)
2. Mater Dei (Calif.)
3. East Ridge (Minn.)
4. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.)
5. Pittsburgh Central Catholic (Pa.)

Top Five Feats … plus one

The North Carolina record for career total touchdowns was broken by senior quarterback Chazz Surratt of East Lincoln. Surratt, a North Carolina commit, accounted for six touchdowns in a 49-9 rout of West Lincoln, giving him 221 touchdowns for his career. Former University of Florida standout Chris Leak set the previous record of 216 while at Independence HS from 2000-02.

Bryce Hoisington of Vashon set not one but two Washington rushing records as his team clobbered Coupeville, 70-31, in its season finale. The junior ran for single-game record 531 yards with nine touchdowns in the game. That also gave Hoisington the state 11-man single-season rushing record with 2,929 yards in only 10 games.

Roosevelt HS (San Antonio) set a Texas record for most yards in a game during an 83-65 win against crosstown rival Lee. The Rough Riders totaled 906 yards of offense on the night, surpassing the previous record of 886 yards set by Jersey Village just one week earlier. The national record of 946 yards of offense in a game was set by Corona Centennial (Calif.) two seasons ago.

Fifth-ranked Allen (Texas) pounded Plano East, 58-23, to go undefeated in the regular season for the third consecutive year. It’s the Eagles’ 53rd straight win, the second-longest winning streak in Texas history and fourth-longest currently among all teams nationwide.

Meanwhile, the longest active win streak for all teams was extended to 91 when 8-man powerhouse Pahranagat Valley (Alamo) opened the Nevada playoffs with a 38-6 win over Beatty. The Panthers haven’t lost since 2007 and have been beaten only four times in the last 12 seasons.

The Texas record held by Yates (Houston) for most consecutive seasons qualifying for the state playoffs ended at 38. The Lions (4-6) lost to Madison (Houston), 33-0, to end the regular season and ensure they won’t be playing postseason football for the first time since 1976.

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

Bosco as your #1? Even your own computer and polls don't have this pick as making any sense... Gorman has beat a top 25 plus they beat Don Bosco Prep a #3 in one of your regions, Bingham a #2 in a region, Chandler #5, and Bellevue at #10...all Bosco has played is a # 5 (former 12) Mater Dei team who really hasn't played anyone either... other than beating 4 teams that have 4+ losses...Gorman is the only team in your top 25 to have played more than one of your ranked teams...and they manhandled all 4 of them...they actually beat a 5th but you dropped that team out of your poll this week when they forfeited 3 games that had nothing to do with Gorman destroying them at their full strength!!
