RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

1. Deerfield Beach surprises Aquinas again: In a week that saw five Top 25 teams beaten by unranked opponents, by far the biggest upset was Deerfield Beach (Fla.) shutting down then-No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-3. The Raiders missed three field goals, including a late 20-yarder that would have tied the game. STA has lost only 15 games to Florida opponents since 2004. Five of those defeats were against Deerfield Beach.

2. Rankings turmoil: A season-high five Top 25 squads were beaten last week, opening the door for five teams to make their national-poll debut for the season. In addition, seven teams entered the regional Top 15s for the first time this year.

3. A new Ohio duo enters the Top 25: The entrance of No. 22. St. Edward and No. 24 Wayne – the teams that met in Ohio’s Division I title game last season -- means five different Buckeye State teams have been nationally ranked already this season. St. Edward made it in after handling then-No. 21 Mainland (Fla.), 47-28.

4. Serra makes up ground out West: The Cavaliers lead this week’s Top Five Risers list after a thrilling 41-38 win against regionally ranked Bishop Amat. Serra, whose only loss was to nationally ranked Centennial (Corona), jumped seven spots to No. 6 in the West Coast Top 15.

5. Klein Collins upsets Westfield to earn ranking: The Tigers ended a three-game losing streak against then-No. 20 Westfield (Houston), 24-19. Westfield played without six players who were suspended due to a game-ending brawl against Spring the week before.

 Top Five Feats … plus one

1. 50 straight for Allen: The No. 5 Eagles now own the second-longest winning streak in Texas history after a 45-13 rout of Hebron and are 18 away from tying the all-time mark set by Celina. It’s the third-best current unbeaten streak in the nation among 11-man teams.

2. Future Hawkeye grabs receiving TD record: Senior tight end T.J. Hockenson of Chariton is now Iowa’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions. The Iowa commit had three touchdown catches in a 41-26 win over Knoxville, upping his career total to 48.

3. Missouri back scores 9 TDs: Jared Rennick of Washington set a single-game state record when he scored ninetouchdowns in an 84-57 win over Holt (Wentzville). Rennick ran for 361 yards in the game and all nine scores were on the ground.

4. Illinois receiving mark set: Dionte Lewis of Warrensburg-Latham totaled 364 receiving yards in a 58-53 win against Clinton. The previous record of 353 yards was set by current Nebraska receiver Jordan Westerkamp for Montini Catholic in 2011.

5. Duncan is NC’s all-time leader in field goals: Keith Duncan of Weddington made kicksfrom 53 and 25 yards in a 34-8 win against Anson to push his career total to 39, breaking the North Carolina state record.

Plus one … Des Moines (Iowa) North won its first game since week three of the 2012 season. The Polar Bears edged Roosevelt, 21-17, to end a 30-game losing streak. It’s only their 10^th win overall in nearly 12 full seasons.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present. 

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
