RECAPPING THE RANKINGS

Top Five Storylines

1. Second-half explosion lifts No. 1 St. John Bosco in NJ … The top-ranked Braves scored 28 unanswered points to lock up a 56-14 win against regionally ranked St. Peter’s Prep. Washington-bound running Sean McGrew had more than 250 total yards and three touchdowns. SJB has outscored its first five opponents by a combined 320-53.

2. Mixed bag for NJ powers … In addition to St. Peter’s Prep taking it on the chin, fellow Non-Public division powers Bergen Catholic and DePaul were also beaten by out-of-state foes. BC was knocked out of the Top 25 by regionally ranked St. Edward (Ohio) and DePaul fell out of the Northeast Top 15 after losing to regionally ranked Canisius (N.Y.). On the plus side, St. Joseph Regional entered the national rankings after beating Eastern Christian Academy (Md.) and regionally ranked Don Bosco Prep handed then-No. 16 Archbishop Rummel (La.) its first loss.

3. Empire State strikes back … For the first time in recent memory (maybe longer), there are three New York teams ranked among the Top 10 of the Northeast. Buffalo power Canisius joined Aquinas and Archbishop Stepinac in the regional poll after its win against DePaul (N.J.).

4. Backup QB helps Allen survive … The quarterback position might be in a state of flux again for the No. 7 Eagles. Junior Mitchell Jonke came off the bench and rallied Allen to a 38-28 win over previously unbeaten Marcus. Jonke replaced four-star senior Seth Green, who threw three first-half interceptions.

5. Chandler returns to Top 25 … The No. 25 Wolves have four consecutive wins since losing at No. 2 Bishop Gorman on Aug. 29. Oregon State-committed quarterback Mason Moran threw for a season-high 375 yards with three touchdowns in a 47-14 win against Mesa Mountain View last week.

Top Five Risers

1. Canisius (N.Y.)
2. Millard West (Neb.)
3. St. Joseph Regional (N.J.)
4. Jordan (Utah)
5. Marshfield (Mass.)

Top Five Feats … plus one

1. Jaley Adams of Kossuth broke Mississippi’s single-game rushing record with 544 yards on 28 carries in a 68-34 win over Corinth. The junior scored eight touchdowns on his record-setting night.

2. Jed Schleimer of Mount Baker (Deming, Wash.) broke his state’s single-game rushing mark on the same night, totaling 515 yards on just 20 carries during a 64-30 rout of Nooksack Valley (Everson).

3. Carson Cline of Lenox (Iowa) returned on not one, not two, not three, but FOUR interceptions for touchdowns as his team crushed Nishnabotna, 66-14, in an 8-man game. Cline also had two touchdowns passing and one rushing score.

4. Skyler Southam of Wasatch (Heber City) entered the Utah record book after booting three field goals in a 23-3 win against Salem Hills (Salem). Southam, a BYU commit, now has 29 career field goals, the most in state history.

5. It took only one half for Whitney (Rocklin, Calif.) quarterback Hunter Rodrigues to total 259 passing yards and seven touchdowns. The senior sat out the second half of the Wildcats’ 76-14 drubbing of Bella Vista (Fair Oaks).

Plus one … Boboquivari (Sells, Ariz.) broke a 66-game losing streak when it topped Arete Prep (Gilbert), 54-40. The Warriors’ hadn’t won a game since September 2008 and were beaten by less than 10 points only once during the streak.

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

Somehow they have L.C. Bird at #8 in the East with these criteria? The team is allowing 10.2 yards a game rushing (and not much more in the air). They have won three straight state titles in 5A (better than 6A in Virginia right now). They have recruits heading to Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, etc. They're coach is widely considered the best in the state. They have the best winning percentage of any school in Virginia all time.

Having Lake Taylor, who has been struggling to beat so-so competition this year is crazy.
