FEATS
OF THE WEEK: For the second time this season, the No. 1 spot in the
National Prep Poll belongs to a Chicago Public League team. Chicago,
Young -- ranked No. 4 last week –- catapulted to the top spot after
hammering No. 9 Long Beach, Calif., Poly, 85-52, at the HoopHall
Classic in Springfield, Mass. Ultra talented 6-foot-11 junior Jahlil
Okafor led the Dolphins with 26 points, seven rebounds, and three
blocks. Young is now 8-1 this season against current or formerly
ranked opponents. (Now 13th-ranked Chicago, Simeon was ranked No. 1
in the first four polls of the season.) ... Montverde, Fla.,
Montverde Academy –- which was top-ranked in the previous five
polls -- dropped to No. 3 after losing in overtime to No. 20 Fairfax,
Va., Paul IV, 69-67, in the final of the Bass Pro Tournament of
Champions in Springfield, Mo. Paul VI's sophomore duo of Franklin
Howard and Marcus Derrickson led the Panthers with 25 and 24 points,
respectively. Montverde's record against current or formerly ranked
teams dropped to 7-1 this season. ... Isaac Bowles of Detroit, Chavez
had an incredible triple-double consisting of 16 points, 38 rebounds
and 12 blocks in his team's 64-58 win against Detroit, University
Prep. ... St. Louis, Vashon senior Derrick Mitchell –- who is
headed to Iowa as a football recruit –- scored 47 points in a 72-67
loss to St. Louis, Soldan. ... Junior Reed Tellinghuisen of Lake
View, Iowa, East Sac exploded for 51 points, leading his team to an
89-68 rout of Gowrie, Prairie Valley.
