FEATS OF THE WEEK: Top-ranked Bradenton,
Fla., Manatee opened with a 41-6 blowout of Miramar on ESPN2. The Hurricanes
scored 38 unanswered points after trailing midway into the second quarter.
Quarterback Cord Sandberg (a Mississippi St. recruit) had three touchdowns --
two passing and one rushing. ... Covington, La., St. Paul’s 29-game
regular-season winning streak ended with a 26-7 loss to No. 12 River Ridge,
La., John Curtis. It was an impromptu replacement game for both teams, whose
scheduled season-openers were canceled due to Hurricane Isaac. ... No. 19
Tulsa, Okla., Union beat Jenks, 14-7, in the Backyard Bowl at the University of
Tulsa’s Chapman Stadium. The rivalry has produced the Class 6A state champion each
of the last 16 seasons. ... A stadium electrical fire left in limbo a matchup
between regionally ranked Salt Lake City, East and Sandy, Utah, Jordan. East
led the game 28-27 in the third quarter when the game was halted. Officials
decided to leave the game’s status as suspended. ... Regionally ranked Allen,
Texas, opened its new $59.6-million dollar stadium in style with a stunning
24-0 shutout of then-No. 8 Southlake, Carroll. Nearly 22,000 tickets were sold
to the game. ... Elsewhere in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Prime Prep
Academy -- a charter school co-founded and coached by Pro Football Hall of Fame
player Deion Sanders -- lost its first-ever football game, falling to Dallas,
Parish Episcopal, 50-6.
