3. Northwestern (Miami)

Outlook: Beware the running of the Bulls. For the second time in three years, Northwestern begins the season ranked in the top five of the National Prep Poll and favored to bring home the 6A state championship. The 2007 team had 10 seniors sign with Division I colleges. Incredibly, this year’s team might match that number. The top player on the team might actually be a junior. Bridgewater, a highly athletic QB, passed for 1,357 yards as a sophomore and followed that up by leading a team comprised of Northwestern players to the championship of the highly competitive Nike 7ON national passing tournament in Oregon over the summer. Highly rated prospect Harris and Monsignor Pace transfer Fashaw are the Bulls’ top veteran receivers. Lamb, who has 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash, gives Northwestern’s spread offense another dimension. An offensive line that has some question marks will be rebuilt around returning all-state selection Wilson. Powerful Miami-bound nose tackle Chandler, a three-year starter, provides the up-front muscle of what should be an outstanding defense. There is also a lot of talent returning in the secondary, including speedsters Marshall and McGee.

No weaknesses. The closest team on their schedule is Miami Central, and while the Rockets could score 40 on most college teams, the defense is average, and they have a mental block when it comes to the Bulls. Northwestern just has the formula of maintaining and reloading. Very few schools with the talent in the region they have can repeat and continue winning. Check the youth league program, which is by far the best feeder system in the country.
