PrepNation 101 Preseason Countdown: No.79 Maine South

PrepNation.com continues the most comprehensive package of preseason high school football rankings ever published. We are counting down the PrepNation 101 Preseason High School Football Rankings, from No. 101 to No. 26, leading up to the release of the official preseason National Prep Poll on August 3.

79. Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.)
Last season: 14-0, Class 8A state champion
Coach: Dave Inserra
Key players: RB-LB Matt Perez (5-11, 205, Sr.), QB-LB Tyler Benz (6-3, 210, Sr.), OT Alex Cichowski (6-3, 225, Sr.), OG Mike Cichowski (6-2, 210, Sr.), SS Ronnie Muck (6-1, 200, Sr.), OT Victor Nelson (6-7, 310, Jr.)
Outlook: After playing bridesmaid with three consecutive state runner-up finishes from 2003-05, the Hawks were finally the bride in 2008 by capturing the 8A title and finishing ranked No. 12 in the National Prep Poll. Only seven starters from that team are back but they include Perez, who led the team with 31 total touchdowns and averaged 11.8 yards each time he touched the ball on rushes, receptions, and returns. Benz had a fine junior season at LB, racking up 18 tackles for losses and six interceptions. He now will become the starting QB after the graduation of all-state performer Charlie Goro (Vanderbilt).
