PrepNation 101 Preseason FB Countdown: No. 23 Plano

23. Plano (Texas)
Last season’s record: 13-2, lost in Class 5A/I semifinals
Coach: Jaydon McCullough
Key players: RB Rex Burkhead (6-0, 205, Sr.), WR Kris Lott (6-2, 200, Sr.), QB Carson Meger (6-0, 195, Sr.), OL Hanur Kim (6-3, 260, Sr.), OL Jordan Talley (6-1, 257, Sr.), OL Justin Boyde (5-11, 205, Sr.), DB/RB LaRon Kelly (5-10, 180, Sr.), DB Justin Collins (6-1, 190, Sr.), DB/WR Ryan McDuff (6-1, 180, Sr.)
Biggest strength: Experience on offense
Question mark: Inexperience on defense
Outlook: After 15 years as an assistant, McCullough takes over as head coach of the winningest program in Texas the last 50 years. The Wildcats have won seven state championships, but their last one came more than a decade ago (1994). Eight starters return from a team that lost, 30-27, to eventual champion Euless Trinity in the semifinals. Most of the experience is on offense, where Burkhead earned all-state recognition as a junior with 1,769 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. Meger was also very productive, throwing for 3,342 yards and 23 touchdowns. His top target will again be Lott, who caught 72 balls for 1,263 yards. The offensive line returns a trio of starters with Kim, Talley and Boyde. Plano had one of the top defenses in the state last year, but all-district performers Kelly and Collins are the only starters left from the unit.
Toughest games: Oct. 17 vs. No. 36 Allen
