Final PrepNation National Prep Football Poll

WAUKEE, Iowa – Boasting six wins over teams that were in the Top 25 this season – and four more against teams that were regionally ranked – St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) is No. 1 in the final National Prep Football Poll.

St. John Bosco is the first team in the 33-year history of the Prep Poll to end the year No. 1 without an unbeaten record. The Braves (13-1) split its games against league rival third-ranked Mater Dei (Santa Ana), losing in the regular season in late October but winning the rematch five weeks later in the Southern California Division I championship game. 

Senior quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei produced a national player-of-the year type season for the nation’s top team. The five-star Clemson signee completed 222-of-344 passes for 4,225 yards with 48 touchdowns and only two interceptions. The 6-foot-5, 245-pounder also ran for over 400 yards with eight touchdowns.

St. John Bosco is California's all-time best ninth squad to claim a National Prep Poll title since 1987. Texas is second on that list with six Prep Poll titlists followed by Florida with four.

Through 10 seasons with Jason Negro as its head coach, St. John Bosco is 111-24 with two state championships.

Second-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) fell just shy in its bid for a third National Prep Poll title. The Raiders (15-0) ended the year with a win over No. 11 St. Louis (Honolulu) and beat No. 12 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) in the season opener but had only two other wins against teams that were regionally ranked during the season.

The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
