Final PrepNation National Prep Basketball Poll

WAUKEE, Iowa – For the first time in the 32-year history of the National Prep Basketball Poll, Georgia is home to the No. 1-ranked team in the final rankings of the season.

The resume for national titlist McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) boasts a spotless 32-0 record with victories against teams from 10 states and eight wins over teams that were nationally ranked at some point this season. The Indians captured the City of Palms Classic and Bass Pro Tournament of Champions during the regular season and capped the postseason off by beating regionally ranked Meadowcreek (Norcross, Ga.) for the Georgia Class AAAAAAA state championship.

McEachern seniors Sharife Cooper and Isaac Okoro were named co-state player-of-the-year by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Cooper, a 6-foot-0 uncommitted five-star point guard, averaged more than 28 points, eight assists, and four steals per game. Okoro, a 6-5 Auburn recruit, averaged a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

It’s rare that a national championship team does not reach the top spot until the final week of the season, but such was the case for McEachern. Previous No. 1 Lumiere (LaPorte, Ind.) dropped to third in the final rankings after losing to now-No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) in the championship of the GEICO Nationals on Saturday.

It was the first state championship and undefeated season for McEachern. Coach Mike Thompson, who improved his record to 270-57 in 11 seasons, picked up national coach of the year accolades from both Naismith (Atlanta Tipoff Club) and USA Today.

McEachern is the third public school in the past four seasons to finish No. 1 and the 13th to do it in the 32-season history of the National Prep Poll.

The National Prep Basketball Poll is compiled by high school sports experts Jamie DeMoney of XOS Digital and Dr. Jeremy Plowman with input from sportswriters, experts, and coaches. The final national Top 25 and regional Top 10's follow:

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

About PrepNation.com
PrepNation.com was originally launched August 1, 2001 by Jamie DeMoney for the purpose of creating a permanent online home for the National Prep Poll football and boys basketball rankings.
