Preseason PrepNation National Prep Football Poll

WAUKEE, Iowa – For the ninth time in the past two decades, the nation’s preseason No. 1 team is from California.

St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) will begin the 2018 season atop the National Prep Poll rankings – the same spot it occupied to begin the 2015 campaign.

St. John Bosco returns a majority of its starters from a team that went 11-3 and finished ranked No. 22 in last year’s final poll. At least 23 players on the current roster have been offered by FBS colleges including USC-committed cornerback Chris Steele, Stanford-bound receiver Colby Bowman, Wisconsin-pledged linebacker Spencer Lytle, and uncommitted five-star quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei.

St. John Bosco opens a new $7.2-million stadium on Friday against perennial Utah power Timpview (Provo). The Braves will also play No. 4 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and regionally ranked opponents JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) and Orange Lutheran during the regular season before a postseason trip through California’s toughest playoff bracket.

Jason Negro is in his ninth season as St. John Bosco’s head coach. His on-field record (not including four forfeits) is 90-18 with a pair of CIF championships and one state crown.

The Braves’ Trinity League rival Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) was preseason No. 1 last season and also finished the year top-ranked after dominating its way to a 15-0 record. The Monarchs were the eighth California team to win a Prep Poll title since 1987.

The National Prep Football Poll is compiled by high school sports expert Jamie DeMoney of XOS Digital. The preseason national Top 25 and regional Top 15's follow:

About the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.

The National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

Nice to see the PrepNation poll back. I was beginning to think it was gone for good.
