THREE
AND OUT
The
top storylines, news, notes and milestones from the week that was in high
school football.
Team
of the Week
Chandler
(Ariz.) avenged its only in-state loss of the season with a convincing 36-21
win over then-No. 11 Mountain Pointe (Phoenix) for the Class 6A state
championship. It was the Wolves' second crown in three seasons. Chandler ended
the year with 10 consecutive wins after it was crushed, 52-7, by Mountain
Pointe on Sept. 8 and lost by a touchdown to No. 13 Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
two weeks earlier.
Worth
Noting
Cass
Tech (Detroit) vaulted seven spots to No. 10 in this week’s rankings after pounding
regionally ranked Detroit Catholic Central (Novi, Mich.), 49-20, for the
Division 1 state title. … No. 22 Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) returned to the
Top 25 after clobbering Catalina Foothills (Tucson), 42-14, in the 4A state
championship. It’s the Sabercats’ fourth state championship in as many seasons.
… Derrick Jones of Lee (Jacksonville, Fla.) accounted for 685 of his team’s 740
yards in a thrilling 61-59 Class 7A playoff victory against Bartram Trail (St.
John’s). Jones accounted for nine touchdowns – including a game-winning
touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the game. … Norwich Free Academy
(Conn.) shut out New London (Conn.), 13-0, on Thanksgiving Day in high school
football’s oldest current rivalry. NFA now holds a 77-67-11 all-time edge since
the teams met for the first time in 1875.
For
the Record
Lamar
(Mo.) set a state record by winning its sixth consecutive state championship.
The Tigers stopped then-unbeaten Trinity Catholic (St. Louis), 26-18, in the Class
2 state final. … Senior Jaylin Bradley of regionally ranked Bellevue West
(Neb.) finished the year with a state-record 50 rushing touchdowns. Bradley ran for
five scores in a dominant 41-6 win over then-regionally ranked Omaha North for
the Class A state championship.

About
the PrepNation National Prep Poll
The
PrepNation National Prep Poll is a continuation of World Feature Syndicate’s
National Prep Poll, which was published and distributed to the Associated Press
and other news organizations from 1987 to 2015.
The
National Prep Poll is second only to the USA Today Super 25 as the longest
continually published weekly high school rankings. While a product of World
Features Syndicate (1987-2015), the National Prep Poll was the only high school
poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the
Associated Press.
Before
authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports
Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from
1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the
start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.
Among
the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings
are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a
team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a
team's coaching and recent tradition.
