Top Three Storylines

Top-ranked Chino Hills (Calif.) capped a dominant season by defeating regionally ranked De La Salle, 70-50, in the California Open Division state championship game. The Wolves (35-0) actually trailed by two points at halftime – and by as many as 10 points early on – but outscored De La Salle, 42-20, in the second half.

No. 4 St. Anthony (N.J.) probably won’t win its fourth National Prep Poll title this season, but the Friars did capture their 13^th New Jersey State Tournament of Champions and finish with a perfect 32-0 record. Eastern Kentucky-bound senior guard Anthony Gist scored 16 points as St. Anthony handled Linden, 55-38, in the T of C final.

Sixth-ranked University of Detroit Jesuit also concluded its season with an undefeated record. Cassius Winston (Michigan State) scored 31 points as the Cubs (28-0) ran past North Farmington, 69-49, in the Class A state championship game.

Top Three Risers

Marion (Ind.) tied a state record by winning its eighth state championship. The Giants rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Evansville Bosse, 73-68, for the Indiana Class 3A championship.

Meanwhile, New Albany secured a spot in this week’s national Top 25 after slipping past regionally ranked McCutcheon (Lafayette), 62-59, for Indiana’s 4A crown. Four-star sophomore guard Romeo Langford led the way with 28 points.

Alaska, which is the first state to hold its football state tournament each year, was the last to crown its state champion in boys basketball. Juneau-Douglas beat Dimond, 38-31, to claim the weekend-ending Class 4A championship. It’s Crimson Bears’ first title since current NBA standout Carlos Boozer led the team to back-to-back championships in 1997-98.

Before authoring rankings for Student Sports and ESPN, National High School Sports Hall of Fame journalist Doug Huff compiled the National Prep Poll rankings from 1987 until 1999. Current author Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
