Week 16 National Prep Basketball Poll released


WAUKEE, Iowa -- After capturing a state championship for the second consecutive season, Garfield (Seattle) re-entered the national poll at No. 17 this week. The Bulldogs, who won Washington's 4A crown last season, are the 3A champions this season after a 66-51 win over regionally ranked Rainier Beach (Seattle). Rainier Beach was bidding for a fourth consecutive 3A title.

     FEATS OF THE WEEK: Naismith National Player of the Year finalist Jaylen Brown sank two free throws with only 0.5 seconds left on the clock to secure the Class AAAAAA state title for No. 3 Marietta, Ga., Wheeler. Brown (uncommitted) finished with 22 points for the Wildcats, who edged Mableton, Ga., Pebblebrook, 59-58, for their sixth state title but first since 2009. ... Highly-touted 6-foot-11 freshman Marvin Bagley III had 16 points and 14 rebounds as No. 4 Tempe, Ariz., Corona del Sol crushed Phoenix, Desert Vista, 57-32, for its fourth consecutive Division I state crown. ... No. 8 Torrance, Calif., Bishop Montgomery topped regionally-ranked Etiwanda, Calif., 56-50, to win the CIF Southern Section Open Division championship. Senior guard Stephen Thompson Jr. (Oregon St.) led the way with 13 points. ... In the CIF-SS Division 2AA game, Anaheim, Calif., Canyon pulled off an incredible second-half comeback, erasing a 28-point deficit to stun Lawndale, Calif., 103-98, in double overtime. Canyon went on a 43-15 run in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Senior guard Nick Anderson (uncommitted) led the Comanches with 37 points and 11 assists. ... No. 17 Seattle, Garfield re-entered the Top 25 after handling regionally-ranked Seattle, Rainier Beach, 66-51, for the Class 3A state championship. Garfield sophomore guard Jaylen Nowell led all scorers with 23 points. It was the second straight title for the Bulldogs, who won the 4A crown last year, and ended a streak of three consecutive 3A titles for Rainier Beach.
