Week 13 National Prep Basketball Poll released

WAUKEE, Iowa -- For the first time in school history, Mustang (Okla.) has cracked the Top 25 in the National Prep Poll. The Broncos have rolled to 20 consecutive wins to open the season, including an early-season triumph in Texas over regionally ranked DeSoto. Meanwhile, the top two teams in the national rankings remained the same. Oak Hill (Va.) held on to the No. 1 spot despite a near upset against Omaha (Neb.) South. Montverde (Fla.) Academy firmed up its already-strong position at No. 2 with back-to-back wins over ranked teams in New Jersey.

     FEATS OF THE WEEK: Top-ranked Mouth of Wilson, Va., Oak Hill trailed in the fourth quarter but rallied to beat Omaha, Neb., South, 59-54. Senior forward Dwayne Bacon (a Florida St. recruit) led Oak Hill with 32 points. The Warriors have beaten teams from 11 states and Australia this season. ... Meanwhile, No. 2 Montverde, Fla., Montverde Academy strengthened its case for a possible third consecutive Prep Poll title by sweeping a pair of ranked teams in New Jersey. Senior forward Ben Simmons had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Eagles’ 71-64 win against No. 10 Roselle, N.J., Roselle Catholic. Simmons (LSU) scored 30 in a 67-62 triumph over regionally-ranked Newark, N.J., St. Benedict’s. Montverde Academy’s 28 wins are against teams from 14 different states. ... Highly-touted sophomore guard Jaylen Nowell scored 33 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent No. 24 Seattle, Garfield from falling to regionally-ranked Seattle, Rainier Beach, 84-81, for its first loss of the season. Senior guard Shadeed Shabazz (uncommitted) led Rainier Beach with 25 points. ... Regionally-ranked Oklahoma City, Putnam City West steamrolled state-ranked Midwest City, Okla., 119-82. Senior guard Tyson Jolly (uncommitted) led the way with 41 points. ... Regionally-ranked DeSoto, Texas, clinched at least a share of its district championship with a thrilling 66-65 four-overtime win against rival Cedar Hill, Texas. When the teams met earlier this season, Cedar Hill beat DeSoto, 59-58, in double overtime.

Doug Huff compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
