Week 7 National Prep Football Poll released

WAUKEE, Iowa -- Another week, another No. 1 team in the National Prep Football Poll. It already was unprecedented to have three different No. 1's in three weeks, but Bishop Gorman's ascent to the top spot -- making it four new top-ranked teams in as many weeks -- is just plain remarkable. The Gaels were ranked third in the preseason but had dropped to No. 6 heading into last Friday's not-as-close-as-the-score-indicates 34-31 win against No. 7 St. John Bosco. The ESPN-televised triumph capped a six-game season-opening gauntlet that saw Bishop Gorman defeat three current or former Top 25 teams, one regionally ranked team, and two state-ranked opponents from Arizona and California. In our view, that is definitely the resume of a prime national-championship contender and the reason Bishop Gorman will probably stay ranked No. 1 ... at least for the time being.

FEATS OF THE WEEK: Las Vegas, Bishop Gorman completed an extraordinary sequence of six wins against top-notch, out-of-state opponents with a 34-31 win against No. 7 Bellflower, Calif., St. John Bosco. The ESPN-televised triumph was Bishop Gorman’s third against a current or former Top 25 team and vaulted it to No. 1 in this week’s national poll. The Gaels -- who have beaten teams from Arizona, California and Utah -- are already the fourth different No. 1 team this season and the third in the last four weeks. ... Single-game scoring records fell in California and Kansas. Upland, Calif., Western Christian edged La Habra, Calif., Whittier Christian, 78-74, to set a new CIF Southern Section scoring mark. Junior quarterback Anthony Hudson led the victorious Fighting Lancers with four passing and two rushing touchdowns. ... The Kansas scoring record for eight-man teams was eclipsed when Otis, Kan., Otis-Bison stampeded Kinsley, Kan., 104-70. It is the third-highest scoring game in eight-man history, according to the National High School Sports Record Book. Sophomore running back Brad Lightfoot starred for Otis-Bison, scoring 10 touchdowns with 415 all-purpose yards. ... Brittney Garner, the first female football coach in Tennessee, collected her first win as Byrdstown, Tenn., Pickett County topped Jellico, Tenn., 41-34. It was only the fourth win in the last six seasons for Pickett County, which named Garner its head coach three weeks ago.

Compiled weekly weekly since 1987 and distributed by World Features Syndicate and the Associated Press, the National Prep Poll is the nation's second oldest weekly high school sports rankings. Doug Huff compiled the rankings from 1987 until 1999. Jamie DeMoney has compiled the poll since the start of the 1999 basketball season to the present.

PrepNation.com was originally launched August 1, 2001 by Jamie DeMoney for the purpose of creating a permanent online home for the National Prep Poll football and boys basketball rankings.

The National Prep Poll is the only high school poll distributed to newspapers and websites around the United States by the Associated Press.

Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.

Kimberly from Wisconsin definitely deserves mention. Kimberly has an offensive line straight from Dairyland USA! Looks like a mini UW Badgers offensive line. Kimberly would beat some of these teams mentioned, but for some odd reason WI teams and players get no respect whatsoever, just look at Melvin Gordon. When Melvin Gordon was a jr and sr his team was knocked out of the playoffs by quality Wisconsin teams.

Jamie, I hope you use thee same criteria when you evaluate the schedules going forward for Bishop Gorman and Don Bosco. Let's face it, BG season is over looking at their in state schedule. I'm sure you know about the Big North United league in New Jersey. I love reading your articles and comments. Take care.
