FEATS OF THE WEEK: The curtain dropped on the 2013-14 season with the championship game of the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School National Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York. Top-ranked Montverde Academy secured its second consecutive National Prep Poll title with a 71-62 win against No. 3 Mouth of Wilson, Va., Oak Hill, the only school to finish No. 1 in the Prep Poll seven times. Junior forward Ben Simmons capped his tournament-MVP performance with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists against Oak Hill. The LSU recruit averaged more than 20 points and 12 rebounds in three games. ... Montverde Academy is only the second team to win back-to-back titles in the 27-year history of the National Prep Basketball Poll, matching Oak Hill’s feat in 1992-94. The Eagles’ resume officially includes 15 wins against teams that were nationally or regionally-ranked at some point during the season. They won three in a row over Top 15 opponents the final weekend of the season. Montverde Academy did have one on-court loss in January to a Chicago, Curie team that had all of its wins -- including three against Top 10 teams -- changed to forfeit losses for using ineligible players. ... There are seven seniors on Montverde Academy’s roster committed to Division I colleges. The group includes McDonald’s All American guard D’Angelo Russell (Ohio St.), forward Makinde London (Xavier) and guard Justin Bibbs (Virginia Tech). The Eagles are coached by Kevin Boyle, who is 76-6 in three seasons at the school and has 10 consecutive Top-25 finishes including his prior coaching stint at the now-closed Elizabeth, N.J., St. Patrick.
