FEATS
OF THE WEEK: Montverde, Fla., Montverde Academy is ranked No. 1 in
the National Prep Poll for the first time in school history. The
Eagles took over the top spot after previous No. 1 Chicago, Simeon
lost to No. 11 DeSoto, Texas, 67-57, in a game televised by ESPN.
Guard Matt Jones, a Duke recruit, led DeSoto with 23 points. Simeon
superstar forward Jabari Parker, who is still slowed by lingering
effects of a broken foot, was held to only five points. ... In
another ESPN game, Kentucky-committed guard Aaron Harrison scored 26
to lift No. 16 Richmond, Texas, Travis to a 56-53 overtime win
against No. 17 San Jose, Calif., Mitty. On the following night,
Travis played at the I-95 Elite Challenge in Baltimore. The Tigers
were upset by regionally ranked Baltimore, St. Frances, 63-58.
Harrison scored 20 points in a losing effort. ... In a rematch of
last season's Washington 3A state championship game, regionally
ranked Seattle, Seattle Prep fought back from a 14-point second-half
deficit to upset No. 18 Seattle, Rainier Beach, 59-57. Senior D.J.
Fenner led Prep with 28 points. ... Another state championship game
rematch took place at the Dallas vs. Houston Hardwood Classic in
Pasadena, Texas. Defending 4A champion Dallas, Kimball was no match
for regionally ranked Houston, Yates. Trenton Brinkley scored a
game-high 23 points to lift Yates to a 97-74 blowout.
