PrepNation 101 Preseason Countdown: No. 7 Lakewood

PrepNation.com continues the most comprehensive package of preseason high school football rankings ever published. We are counting down the PrepNation 101 Preseason High School Football Rankings, from No. 101 to No. 26, leading up to the release of the official preseason National Prep Poll on August 3.

7. Lakewood (Calif.)
Last season: 10-3, CIF-SS Pac-5 Division semifinalist
Coach: Thadd Mac Neal
Key players: QB Jesse Scroggins (6-2, 200, Sr.), WR Kevin Anderson (6-0, 185, Sr.), RB Jerry Stone (5-10, 200, Sr.), DB Dion Bailey (6-0, 195, Sr.), DT Justin Utupo (6-2, 245, Sr.), DB Brennan Kelley (5-9, 180, Sr.), WR Chris Davis (5-7, 165, Sr.), OL Kelley Harpham (6-3, 260, Jr.), LB Rahim Cassel (6-2, 215, Jr.), RB Alley Long (5-9, 185, Jr.)
Outlook: If the Lancers are ever going to both unseat nationally ranked Long Beach Poly as Moore League champion and win their first CIF championship, one would think this would have to be the year. Seven starters return on both sides of the ball and there are at least five major Division I recruits in this year’s senior class. USC-bound QB Scroggins returns to lead an explosive offense. As a junior he passed for 2,556 yards and 24 touchdowns. His top target will again be Anderson, an Arizona St. recruit who has great hands and runs excellent routes. The Lancers have equally effective weapons in the running game with Stone, a breakaway back who had 1,671 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns last season, and speedy junior Long. The biggest area for concern is along the offensive line, where Harpham returns after an all-league sophomore season. Notre Dame-bound tackle Utupo is the top returning player in the Lancers’ defensive front. He had 10 sacks last season. Bailey, a USC commit, returns to roam the secondary after picking off nine passes and earning All-CIF accolades a year ago.

We beat Poly in 1982 and tied in 1983. Been way too long! I remember blocking Raul Laura when he played. He was a tough linebacker. This is Lakewoods best shot this year. Go Lancers!!
