PrepNation 101 Preseason Countdown: No. 45 East St. Louis

PrepNation.com continues the most comprehensive package of preseason high school football rankings ever published. We are counting down the PrepNation 101 Preseason High School Football Rankings, from No. 101 to No. 26, leading up to the release of the official preseason National Prep Poll on August 3.

45. East St. Louis (Ill.)
Last season: 13-1, Class 7A state champion
Coach: Darren Sunkett
Key players: QB Detchuaz Wray (6-0, 170, Sr.), RB Courtney Molton (5-8, 165, Sr.), RB Vinson Arterbridge (6-1, 215, Jr.), WR Keante’ Minor (6-0, 195, Jr.), WR Jylon Spraggins (5-10, 170, Sr.), LB Isiah Grey (6-1, 200, Sr.), DL Eric Howard (6-3, 310, Sr.), DL Clint Tucker (6-3, 280, Jr.), S Darius Stewart (6-2, 200, Sr.)
Outlook: The Flyers ended a 17-year state championship draught last season, winning their final 13 games and capturing the 7A title. Twelve total starters return including Wray, a three-year starter at QB. He has more than 5,100 passing yards and 800 rushing yards with 72 touchdowns in his career. Leading rushers Molton (3,100 career rushing yards) and Arterbridge, a talented junior, are also back. Minor and Spraggins have large shoes to fill at the receiver position after two major Division I recruits graduated. The Flyers’ defense is strong up front with returning starters Howard and Tucker. An otherwise inexperienced secondary got a major boost when Stewart transferred in from McCluer North (Florissant, Mo.).

i'm a lifelong flyer fan, but no way can hawthorne and appleton be replaced. sure, arterbridge is back at full strength, but minor can't fill the shoes of those two powerful wide receivers. also, the loss of phillips on defense will prove unsurmountable, even with that transfer from mccluer north. the flyers open with cinci elder, then take on middletown. after those two losses, maybe they can breeze through the southwestern conference, but they'll not repeat as 7A champs. they will not get past the likes of st. rita, wheaton warrenville south, and glenbard west this year. i hope i'm wrong, but the first week should determine how good the flyers are not.

IF ANY FOOL THINK THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT SHOULD BE RANKED #45 THEY GOT A SURPRISE COMMING. THESE KIDS ARE HOT AND THE GOT SWAG, HEART AND DETERMINATION, AND TRADITION ON THEIR SIDE. THEY HAVE A SOLID COACHING STAFF, AND THEIR HUNGRY. THEY KNOW WHAT IT TAKE NOW, AND RETURN 13 STARTERS. GET READY FOR A SWEEP OF THE CONFERENCE AND A RETURN TRIP TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE DEFENDING CLASS 7A STATE CHAMPIONS.

Wow! That was a CRUSHING they put on that overrated Ohio team. Looks like somebody got the wake-up-call they had coming to them. Don't worry though, Middletown will go a little bit easier on them than Elder did. Go St. X Bombers!
