Week 7 National Prep Football Poll released

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Defending 5A champion St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) moved into the No. 1 spot of this week's National Prep Poll, giving the talent-rich state of Florida the top-ranked team in the Top 25 for at least one week for the third consecutive season

The Raiders, who defeated previously unbeaten South Plantation 38-10 following a two-week layoff, join Miami Northwestern -- which spent 12 weeks at No. 1 last season before finishing the year ranked No. 2 -- and Lakeland -- which took over the top spot in Week 8 of 2006 and ended the season as Prep Poll champion -- as recent Florida-based top-ranked teams.

Defending South Carolina 4A/I titlist Byrnes (Duncan) moved up one spot to No. 2 after routing rival Gaffney, 42-14. The Rebels, who already own two impressive wins against out-of-state opponents, host reigning Florida 2B champion Pahokee this Friday on ESPNU.

Previous No. 1-ranked Euless (Texas) Trinity dropped two spots to No. 3 after defeating then-unbeaten district foe Keller, 17-10. The Trojans fell in the rankings despite having defeated four opponents with a combined record of 13-3 this season.

Bishop McDevitt.....Hgb.,PA...5-0....How do they drop out of regional by winning..where is the logic?

McDevitt dropped out because Bergen Catholic moved up. Simple as that. No team is locked into a spot until it loses. Should another team do enough to move up in the rankings, someone must move down. Bergen Catholic defeated Maryland's #7 ranked team Gilman over the weekend. That was enough to move them up in the rankings.

Can't really complain about the drop for Trinity. I saw the Keller/Trinity game and I don't think Keller is that good of a team. Trinity didn't look like a national #1.

The pouring rain was the perfect setting for tailback Marcus Lattimore. The bruising junior broke the school’s all-time rushing record early in the game, even though he needed 103 yards to do so.

He eclipsed the mark on the second play of the second quarter with a 14-yard rush. With that play he passed Mike Glenn for the record. Glenn, who played in the mid-70s, finished with 2,835 yards. Lattimore finished Friday night with 220 yards and now has 2,952 yards.

The Indians (3-2) had some chances to stop Lattimore but couldn’t bring him down. Lattimore started the scoring party on the second play of the game when he found a large hole and ran 71 yards for the score.

Lattimore added a 26-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

“You can’t arm tackle Marcus Lattimore,” Gaffney coach Phil Strickland said. “He’s as good of a back as I’ve seen in 27 years of coaching football. He’s a quality back and he runs hard. One arm isn’t going to bring him down.”

“Marcus is just an unbelievable back,” Miller said. “He doesn’t care about records or anything as long as Byrnes wins.”

Even if the score doesn’t indicate it, the nation’s No. 1-ranked Rebels (5-0) faced some adversity during the contest. They were up 27-14, pinned deep in their own territory and had third down with 13 yards to go. Lattimore broke off a 64-yard run on a draw play to swing the momentum.

On the next play, Dodd connected with Craig Weick for a 29-yard touchdown. He was the second Weick to score, as older brother Lee caught a 14-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter.

The Rebels’ other score was a 47-yard catch-and-run by Nick Jones.

Byrnes led 20-0 after the first quarter and neither team scored in the second period. The Rebels outgained Gaffney 154-29 in the opening quarter.

Byrnes is planning on helping with the fees for the funeral of the Pahokee player and will have an flower arrangement in the corner of one endzone out of respect to his family, freinds and players alike. May God bless this area in time of healing. We hope they travel safely to our game and home. It will be on ESPNU this friday night.

You probably already know this, but Lowndes County Vikings (Valdosta, GA) defeated Northside Warner Robins, GA 24 - 7 (previously unbeaten in last 35 games!) this past Friday night (Oct. 3, 2008). The Vikings have won the GA state championships 3 times in the last 4 years, with another one on the way! I believe they will move into the #1 spot after this tremendous win over Northside!

Lowndes should be #1 after beating Northside Warner Robins 24-7. It was a convincing win against another state and national powerhouse.
