PrepNation 101 Preseason FB Countdown: No. 17 Skyline

17. Skyline (Sammamish, Wash.)
Last season’s record: 14-0, Class 4A champion
Coach: Mat Taylor
Key players: QB Jake Heaps (6-2, 190, Jr.), WR/DB Gino Simone (6-0, 175, Sr.), WR/DB Kasen Williams (6-2, 195, So.), WR/DB Jake Knecht (6-1, 165, Sr.), OL/DL Grant Engel (6-1, 255, Sr.), OL/DL Rob Tramonte (6-1, 250, Sr.), DB/WR William Chandler (6-0, 165, Sr.)
Biggest strength: Passing game, defense
Question mark: Running game
Outlook: The Spartans averaged 40 points per game during the final 13 weeks last season while allowing less than 10. With seven offensive and six defensive starters returning, Skyline and recently promoted first-year head coach Taylor expect to hammer opponents with more of the same this fall. Perhaps the nation’s top quarterback prospect in his class, Heaps had an amazing sophomore season completing 60 percent of his throws for 3,095 yards and 31 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He also had 14 rushing touchdowns. Simone was on the receiving end of 70 of Heaps’ completions for 1,417 yards and 20 touchdowns. Another very talented underclassman is Williams, who caught 19 balls for 394 yards and two scores as only a freshman. Skyline’s defense lacks some of the star-power of its offense, but it should be effective. The leaders of the unit are two-way linemen Engel and Tramonte.
Toughest games: Sept. 6 vs. WC No. 19 Eugene (Ore.) Sheldon in Portland, Ore., Oct. 10 vs. Eastlake, Oct. 17 vs. Issaquah
