It's already game-time in Alaska

Two-a-days aren't even underway yet in many states. But in Alaska, practice time is over.

Defending large-school champion Juneau-Douglas, which went 11-0 last year, is ranked No. 1 in the first statewide high school football poll of the season.

The Bears open the season Saturday with a 724-mile road trip to Fairbanks to battle West Valley High.

The Wolfpack is hoping the 2008 season is much better than 2007, when they finished a dreadful 0-8.

In case you were wondering about the weather in Fairbanks, Alaska, this time of year. Let's just say it feels very much like football weather should. The National Weather service predicts mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and a game-time temperature around 55 degrees.

Playoff action begins Oct. 3 and Alaska will crown the first state champions of the '08 football season the weekend of Oct. 17-18.
