PrepNation 101 Preseason FB Countdown: No. 80 DeMatha

80. DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.)
Last season’s record: 10-2, WCAC champion
Coach: Bill McGregor
Key players: QB Tommy Chroniger (6-1, 195, Sr.), OT Pete DeSouza (6-7, 315, Sr.), LB Raheem Cardwell (6-1, 195, Sr.), TE Jeremiah Mathis (6-3, 250, Sr.), WR Michael Milburn (6-3, 180, Sr.), RB Donte Washington (5-10, 200, Sr.), RB Jeff Knox (6-3, 185, Jr.)
Biggest strength: Experience at QB, skill players
Question mark: Inexperience on defense
Outlook: DeMatha had 13 players sign with Division I schools in February, which was nothing unusual. The Stags have had at least eight players earn scholarships every year since 1990. So, there are holes to fill due to graduation – but there is considerable talent ready to step up and make an impact. Chroniger assumes his second season starting under center. He made a verbal commitment to Eastern Michigan after throwing for over 1,500 yards last season. DeSouza, who is headed to Maryland, is the lone returning regular on the offensive line. Cardwell, one of the team’s top playmakers on defense, says he will play at Syracuse. Perhaps the most intriguing story going into the season is the arrival of Knox, a transfer who ran for over 1,200 yards and 15 TDs helping lead Pittsburgh Central Catholic to the Pennsylvania Class 4A state championship and a 16-0 record last season.
Toughest games: Oct. 2 at Good Counsel (ESPN2), Oct. 31 vs. St. John’s
