for the second time this season, 60-57, in the final game of the Nike Dream
Classic at Long Beach, Calif. No. 7 Santa Ana, Calif., Mater Dei whipped San
Diego, University, 72-47, in other Dream Classic action . . . No. 8
Hyattsville, Md., DeMatha beat Worcester, Mass., Holy Name, 69-55, in the
feature game of the DeMatha Invitational in front of 3,058 fans at the MCI
Center in Washington, D.C. Hot shot junior Billy Edelin of DeMatha scored 39
points and was named MVP. The game also matched Holy Name’s 7-6 Neil Fingelton
and DeMatha’s 7-4 Matt Slaninka . . . No. 22 St. Louis, Vashon defeated
regionally ranked East St. Louis, Ill., 71-59, before 14,000 fans at St. Louis’
Kiel Center . . . No. 2 Chicago, Westinghouse whipped Rockford, Ill., Guilford,
85-56, at the High School Hoops Showdown in Rockford . . . Bubba Fatino, who is
legally blind, scored his first varsity basket, a layup, in West Des Moines,
Iowa, Dowling’s 72-53 win vs. Des Moines Hoover. Fatino is a 5-9 guard for the
state-No. 1 Maroons.
