Week 16 National Prep Football Poll released

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Another weekend filled with postseason upsets ushered the arrival of five teams into the Week 16 National Prep Football Poll.

The highest riser was Eastern Pennsylvania power North Penn (Lansdale) at No. 11. The Knights took another step closer to winning their first PIAA Class 4A state title since 2003 by blanking rival Neshaminy, 28-0, in the District One championship game.

Also making its season debut in the national poll was No. 16 Phoebus (Hampton, Va.). The Phantoms appear likely headed to their fourth Division 5 championship after destroying then-No. 24 and defending champion Stone Bridge (Ashburn), 38-8, in the state semifinals.

The third debut team in this week's poll is perennial Louisiana power West Monroe at No. 18. The Rebels appear to be closing in on their seventh state championship in 20 seasons after their 37-16 blowout of Ouachita in the 5A quarterfinals.

Rounding out the new entrants in this week's Top 25 are a pair of squads that were nationally ranked earlier this season. No. 22 Center Grove (Greenwood) avenged its only loss of the season by defeating Carmel, 36-33, for the Indiana 5A championship.

No. 23 Glenville (Cleveland) will end the 2008 season without winning a state title, but the Tarblooders were the only team to defeat Ohio Division I champ St. Ignatius, which is ranked No. 8 this week. The Wildcats won the rematch between the teams during the playoffs in a squeaker, 8-7.

As far as Byrnes' revenge victory over Dorman, It was the Marcus Lattimore show. There were college scouts all over that stadium and he put on a show. He controlled the game with 38 carries for 268 yards and 2 TD's. If he isn't a top 50 national recruit next year, then something is terribly wrong.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, South Pointe (Rock Hill, SC) is good enough to be ranked in the top 25. They have been the most dominant team (which is not the same as the best) in South Carolina this year, outscoring their opponents 637-84 this year!!

I've seen Byrnes, Dorman, and South Pointe play this year. Devonte Holloman and Stephon Gilmore are arguably the top two seniors in the state this year and would be a hard matchup to deal with. South Pointe's defense is the best in the state and one the better defenses in the country. They have the size, speed, and athleticism to play with and beat both Byrnes and Dorman who you've had ranked previously.

If everything works out and South Pointe defeats Northwestern (Rock Hill, SC) this coming Friday and win the 4A Division II championship (South Pointe defeated Northwestern 28-7 earlier this year), Jamie and the folks here at prepnation should strongly consider placing them in your national top 25 because they are that good.

SOUTH POINTE IS A GREAT TEAM THIS YEAR AND AND IF THEY WIN THERE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP THEY SHOULD END UP IN THE TOP 25 IN THE POLL, BUT WE HAVE SEEN BYRNES,DORMAN,TWICE THIS YEAR AND SOUTH POINTE ONCE, SOUTH POINT HAS A GREAT DEFENSE,AND OFFENSE, DORMAN AND BYRNES THIS YEAR ARE IN A MUCH STRONGER CLASS THAN SOUTH POINTE AND MANY OF THE TEAM BYRNES HAS FACED THIS YEAR WERE OUT-OF-STATE POWERS, THUS WE CANT SEE SOUTH POINTE BEATING DORMAN OR BYRNES THIS YEAR, IN FACT DID NOT BYRNES WIN A PRESEASON GAME VS SOUTH POINTE.
Among the criteria used in the weekly compilation of the National Prep Poll rankings are strength of schedule, the ability to accomplish the ultimate goal on a team's schedule (i.e. winning a championship), impact players and performers, a team's coaching and recent tradition.
GIVE IT A LITTLE MORE TIME, AND KEEP WINNING, AND A STRONGER SCHEDULE COULDNT HURT, AND WE WILL DO OUR PART AND KEEP WATCHING, AND BEST OF LUCK ON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Jamie - gotta be honest...you have really jumped the shark this season and I don't know why.

From an Ohio perspective...let me get this straight. Colerain (of which I am a fan) hasn't played in 3 weeks and NOW they enter the midwest rankings?? WHY? Also, Glenville, with the least amount of wins of any team in the entire top 25 against EASILY the easiest schedule of any top 25 team also goes in the rankings because their only loss was to Ignatius and they also haven't played in a month!?

I love Ohio as much as anyone, but goodness gracious, you can't see that the Buckeye state was down this year? Your gurus didn't see that? Rank Ignatius and that's it. And there is no way that they should be any higher than 15-18 in your rankings. Remember, they needed overtime to beat a 4-6 St. Xavier team that didn't make the playoffs.

Think about it.

Maryville (TN) continues to get the love, but just like in 2007, Maryville will not be the top-rated team in the Volunteer State in any of the four major ratings systems. That spot will belong to Memphis University School, who, like their fellow program MBA from Tennessee's Division II did in 2007, will be atop all of the ratings services.

MUS beat Olive Branch by the same margin mighty South Panola did. Who does Maryville ever beat (much less play) that gives them the same credibility?

It seems Maryville is ranked because of their streak. Rank 'em high because they probably will not get beat and therefore make you look good.

Dig deeper. Maryville may have the best program currently in Tennessee but does not have the best team. Not this year. Not last year. Not in many years.

Anonymous Colerain fan --

First off, sorry to hear that our poll has gone the way of the Fonz.

With regard to your points:

1) Colerain re-entered the rankings on the basis of a couple of factors. The most obvious is that they played Elder to a double OT game whereas Pickerington Central lost to Elder by two TDs. Secondly, when the entire season was re-evaluated, it was clear that Colerain had a more accomplished resume this season. They beat a Top 10 PA team (McKeesport) as well as that 4-6 St. Xavier team that defeated two regionally ranked and possible state championship teams (Don Bosco Prep and Prattville) this season.

As for Glenville, they are not in the Top 25 for merely losing to St. Ignatius (8-7). I think your forgot the fact that Glenville also defeated St. Ignatius this season. After watching Ignatius beat up on the rest of the Division I field, it became more than clear that Glenville was the second best team in Ohio this season. Those two factors, right now, are enough to get Glenville just into the national rankings. But Glenville's spot in the final Top 25 is not secure. There are still other teams that could win their way into the rankings in these final weeks.

With regard to St. Ignatius not deserving of their high ranking. Just respectfully disagree. Their impressive run to the top state championship in one of America's best prep football states was a Top-10 caliber performance, at least for now.

So, I guess we just disagree.

Year after year we see that Bellevue (wa.) rarely makes a stable apperance in the top 25. This year their smallest margin of victory is I believe 20+ points, and this is a team that takes its starters out as soon as possible. They humiliated a Bothell team that Skyline (currently #13) had to beat on a last minute drive in the 4th quarter. The proof is in the pudding...
Another fun little fact is that Skylines coach has denied multiple offers from Bellevue coaches to play one another next year at Qwest Field on Fox Sports Net. Hmm I Wonder Why??

PrepNationSports,

No feedback on Maryville?

Seriously, I want to know, outside of "The Streak", what makes Maryville the top-rated team from Tennessee in your rankings? All the power ratings have them lower than other teams in Tennessee, both this year and last, their SOS is far from the best in Tennessee, they have no signature wins, etc.

I have all the respect in the world for those of you who stick your neck out to publish ratings. Nevertheless, it would be refreshing to see some quantitative analysis as to why a Maryville gets the nod from Tennessee when an MUS does not, even though most, if not all, of the criteria on which highly ranked teams are based would favor MUS this year (or MBA last year) from Tennessee.

MBA 19, Hillsboro 14
MUS 35, MBA 7
Hillsboro 10, Maryville 7

Maryville = paper tiger

Caught up too much in the streak.

Rank MUS and save some face!

The people who do these rankings are totally oblivious and ridiculous. They have no concept of what to grade or how. Take recent ranking of unknown Lansdale Pa. they come in at what? 10th I think or something from totally unranked and then lose the following week to an unranked in the top 25. It seems like the Dorman thing all over again as well as band wagon jumping. What about all the teams that have practically been on top 25 all year. You jump right over them with a stupid rank like Lansdale. THAT is utter disrespect and a convoluted sense of loyalty. Give the teams with a history of THIS year and of consistancy a REAL ranking. When 1 falls that is ranked higher and the lower continues to win BUMP THEM UP!!!! Don't jam in a previously unranked way ahead of them. For example look at Camden County all year and you just keep jacking teams in front of them. Not only did they beat NS Warner Robbins in the playoffs a regionally ranked team in the SW THE hardest region in America but they also just stomped on Newnan another regionally ranked team. They almost scored as many points in one game against them as Newnan has let against all year. Pleasse do the right thing and rank Camden in the top 5. As well bump all the mainstays all year higher instead of newcomers. This would really validate your rankings a lot more than what garbage you spewwing out right now. As for your probable question of why I am on here looking to begin with. 1 reason ONLY it's the fastest way to view most of the top scores of H.S. football. Signed tragically dissapointed wit what could be a rival poll to ESPN.

I know DLS is not having one of their strong years, but having OLU and Lakewood rank ahead of DLS shows that this site plays the wait and see game too much. Lakewood is 6-6 and is rank. Give me a break. LOL
